ISBA slams MPs' move to outlaw ads to children

The Incorporated Society of British Advertisers (ISBA) has hit out

at an Early Day Motion, which is expected to be supported by more than

70 MPs, to ban marketing to under-fives. The motion will be raised today

(Wednesday) by Labour MP Debra Shipley.

In the latest stage of the debate on advertising to children, ISBA

director of public affairs Ian Twinn attacked Shipley's comments as "a

warning that there are still people out there who have unreconstructed

views about the impact of advertising on children and how commercial TV

should operate".

Shipley made her remarks during a House of Commons Culture Select

Committee on the future of the BBC.

Separately, in a report published last month, the Committee of Public

Accounts said that the Department of Education and Skills should issue

guidance for schools on accepting offers from commercial sponsors if it

is to tackle the growing problem of obesity in England.
