From the end of May, Ireland.com, which attracts 1.5m regular users, will offer visitors the option of paying weekly, monthly or annual subscription fees to access premium content on its site.
A weekly subscription will cost €10 (£6.20), while an annual one will cost €100, with special rates offered to businesses wanting to take out multiple subscriptions.
These charges will pay for access to most of the Irish Times, its breaking news service, its searchable archive and content from some of its microsites, which include property, jobs, tourism and motoring sites.
Mary Mangan, chief operating officer of Ireland.com, said the charges are being introduced as part of a growing trend among leading content websites.
Ireland.com follows in the footsteps of Scottish business website Business am, The New York Times, the Irish News and the online operations of UK dailies The Times and the Daily Telegraph, which have all started charging for premium content such as archive material.
Ireland.com was set up in 1994 as the online version of the Irish Times. The website drew 1.5m unique users in March 2001, making it Ireland's second most-visited site behind Ryanair.com.
