The move comes just just two months after Johnston relaunched New Woman as NW and introduced a raft of changes, including a monthly supplement called Style Stalker, after sales fell by 14.4% to 231,785 year-on-year.
On Now, Johnston succeeds Jane Ennis, the title’s editor since its launch in 1996, who announced in November that she would stand down in the new year.
IPC said in November that Ennis would be overseeing some changes to the title before she left.
Once the biggest-selling celebrity magazine in the UK, Now was relegated to fourth place, behind Closer, Heat and OK!, in the January to June 2006 ABCs with sales down 8.8% year-on-year to 539,902. Johnston is expected to take over by April, after overseeing the handover at New Woman.
A former editor of Bliss, Johnston joined New Woman in November 2005 after helping to launch Grazia as features director.
