Edwards was most recently launch editor of Reveal, the celebrity weekly from ACP-Natmags. Prior to that, she was at Bauer for seven years, spending time on special projects as well as on That's Life. She has also worked at The Sun and The News of the World.
Her arrival at Woman on October 3 will see her return to the real-life side of the women's weekly market, which has been squeezed by the rise of celebrity titles as well as the arrival of IPC's new real-life title Pick Me Up in January.
All real-life titles experienced circulation falls in the first six months of the year, but Woman's 8% fall to 485,463 was one of the steepest.
Evelyn Webster, managing director of IPC Connect, saluted Edwards' track record and said that she had not rushed into appointing a candidate.
"We've taken our time to ensure that we lured exactly the right editor. It's a magazine with a fantastic heritage, and with Sarah at the helm it has a fabulous future ahead of it," she said.
Woman's acting editor Lisa Burrow was appointed deputy editor of Emap's Closer last month.
