IPA welcomes self-regulation in TV advertising

LONDON - The government's decision to support self-regulation in the media industry has been welcomed by the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising.

The industry body had lobbied Lord Puttnam's joint scrutiny committee, along with ISBA and the Advertising Association, to extend the self-regulation of advertising to the broadcast sector.

One of the issues the committee had been looking at was how the advertising industry would be regulated after the creation of the communications super watchdog Ofcom.

IPA director general Hamish Pringle said self-regulation would avoid different regulatory bodies taking conflicting views of what are essentially the same brand communications in different media channels.

"The IPA is totally committed to the concept of accredited self regulation and, like others involved, is grateful to the Puttnam committee for finally defining these terms, which accurately reflect what we all believe is the right way forward both in the UK and Europe," he said.

The industry now expects that the communications bill will be included in the Queen's speech on November 13.
