The website now lists over 1000 venues, including Westminster Abbey, Borough Market and the Olympic Copper Box Arena and handles 2000 meetings, conference and event enquiries each month.
Co-founder Edward Poland said: "Hire Space has been on quite a journey and we’re delighted with this vote of confidence. This significant investment will take Hire Space to exciting new places."
The website is free to use for the general public and has recently launched an additional complimentary service unearthing unusual meeting spaces for London businesses. It will use this latest investment to launch a Manchester office this summer, with a view to expand internationally in 2015.
Hire Space launched to the public in April 2013 when Edward Poland, a speechwriter working in local politics, and Will Swannell, a teacher in a London academy, saw an opportunity for schools and community centres to generate additional revenue by hiring out their surplus space. In its first year the website generated 500,000 hits and sent 20,000 enquiries - worth more than £7m - to its venues.
The website has been described as a "great idea" by former UK Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox and is backed by the team behind TopTable.com, which sold to US giant Open Table for $55m in 2010.
