Ingram is expected to leave the agency within weeks. Ben Langdon, chairman and chief executive of McCann-Erickson EMEA, confirmed her departure but declined to comment further.
Insiders expect Langdon to take a firmer grip on the agency, which has performed disappointingly over the past 12 months.
McCann's lacklustre creative reputation has been further dented by a failure to get on the pitch list for the prestigious Orange account at the end of last year and news this week that hotshop Mother has been called in to compete with McCann on advertising for Coca-Cola original.
Langdon is thought to be restructuring McCann's European operation, separating the roles of country chairmen from the chief executive briefs of the national advertising agencies.
The move would enable country heads to better manage McCann's integrated offering for clients, while freeing up advertising chiefs to focus on improving creative output.
Ingram joined McCann in October 2001 after 16 years at Saatchi & Saatchi, the last six years of which she was UK chief executive.
She has been described as one of the most powerful and influential women in the UK advertising scene, with exceptional client handling skills.
Ingram is also chairman of London Tourist Board.
