On the day before the deadline for industry submissions to the All Party Parliamentory Group inquiry into the UK event industry, Jackson shares his views on the industry as a driver for economic growth.

"I’m delighted that our event industry is presenting evidence to the Houses of Parliament on the subject of exporting," he says. "The event industry is one of the unsung heroes of the UK economy – while many have talked of double and triple dip threats, the UK event industry has doubled in size over the last five years, with foreign markets being a key driver of this growth.

"We are a world leader in events, and our expertise is sought from around the world – just witness the IVCA’s missions to India and China in recent years. The Olympic and Paralympic opening and closing ceremonies yet again provided a showcase for what the UK event industry can do.

"The government needs to be aware of what a driver for economic growth the industry can be. Whether it’s enabling foreign companies and organisations to choose the UK as a destination for conferences, expos and congresses through streamlined visa requirements, or ensuring the smoother operation of UK businesses abroad through tax and VAT agreements, much can be done by the government to help promote this growth sector of UK PLC.

"Even better, it needn’t cost the country anything. We’re talking about streamlining bureaucracy. In fact, it will create income for the country. We’re not asking for handouts, although inclusion in the next trade mission wouldn’t go amiss."

Performing Artistes supported events in 15 different countries on four continents in 2012.
