Industry launches pop art blitz to promote outdoor

LONDON – Pop art-style posters with the words 'Zapp', 'Pow' and 'Bam' are to appear across the UK as part of the first advertising campaign by the outdoor industry designed to promote the medium to media agencies.

The drive, by the Outdoor Advertising Association, will appear on 4,000 sites in 16 different formats, including washroom posters, supermarket trolleys, six-sheets and electronic hoardings.

The cartoon-style posters run with the tagline "For impact posters are invincible" They aim to raise the profile of the medium at a time when TV advertising is suffering as a result of reduced marketing budgets.

In the first quarter of 2003, outdoor advertising took an 8.4% share of the UK display ad market, the highest it has taken for that period, but the OAA is aiming higher and is pushing for outdoor's share to hit 10%.

The OAA appointed Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO to handle the creative brief for the push in June.

The campaign breaks on August 11 and 13 outdoor media owners are contributing media space across 16 different outdoor formats and channels. The campaign is unique in that it is supported by the largest ever cross-section of outdoor formats.

Alan James, chief executive of the OAA , said: "AMV BBDO's work showcases the range of exciting opportunities the medium has to offer and fully demonstrates the impact that outdoor advertising can deliver."

The campaign will run in Greater London, Manchester, the West Midlands and Clydeside with media provided by the following OAA members: Clear Channel, JCDecaux, Maiden, Primesight, Viacom Outdoor, Boomerang, blowUP, Mega Profile, Megaposter, Van Wagner, High-Tech Solutions, Media Vehicle and the In-House Group.

Farah Ramzan, managing director of AMV BBDO, said: "AMV has a proud tradition of doing great work on posters and the OAA invitation was the perfect opportunity for us to show how creative and impactful the medium can be."

The campaign was art directed by Paul Belford and written by Nigel Roberts.Typography was by John Tisdall and Paul Belford.
