Independent on Sunday to be redesigned

The Independent on Sunday is being repackaged, but its publisher, Independent News & Media, is stopping short of publishing it in tabloid form.

Despite some measure of success with a fully compact Independent on Saturday, the Sunday main news section will remain a broadsheet.

However, from 14 March the title will publish a compact business section and is introducing a reviews and culture section called ABC, which will take the form of a 64-page colour magazine. It will cover books, arts, television and radio.

The Independent on Sunday is also expanding its colour supplement to include more features on homes, food, drink and gardening.

Ivan Fallon, the chief executive of Independent News & Media, said: "The exciting developments reinforce Independent News & Media's commitment to The Independent on Sunday. The new magazine and compact sections build on the high-quality reputation our Sunday paper earned through its highly acclaimed war coverage and beyond."

Separately, The Independent is still facing some opposition from agencies concerning its sales policy for its compact variant. At least two top-five media agencies are refusing to take full-page ads in the compact edition because of rates that require agencies to pay 70 per cent of the full-page broadsheet rate for a full-page in the compact edition.
