Independent on Sunday to launch new arts magazine

LONDON - The Independent on Sunday is to spend £2m promoting a new arts magazine, Talk of the Town, and a revamped travel and leisure section.

Talk of the Town will only be distributed in the Carlton ITV region and is described by the IoS as being unashamedly aimed at the very top end of the London market. Reports say the section is a cross between The New Yorker and The Spectator, and could be used to advertise luxury goods, computers and cars at the more expensive end of the market.

The name Talk of the Town is lifted directly from The New Yorker, where it is one of the magazine's most famous sections.

The new travel and leisure section will be called Time Off and will cover travel, weekend breaks and other leisure activities. The changes will also see Life Etc, the arts section of the IoS, increased in size. The revamp is to debut on on March 2.

Lawrie Procter, commercial director for the Independent on Sunday, said: "It is fantastic to be getting expanded arts and travel coverage, these are two areas that the paper covers incredibly well and advertisers have already recognised that our audience are big consumers of both."

He said that the upmarket positioning of Talk of the Town would move it above all of the current London offerings. The changes in the newspaper have come about after research showed that Independent on Sunday readers wanted more upmarket arts coverage.

The most recent newspaper ABCs revealed that the circulation of the Independent on Sunday fell by 7.18% year on year to 176,556, while all the other Sunday broadsheets were up.
