LONDON - Journalists at the Independent and Independent on Sunday have voted to take industrial action this week over compulsory editorial redundancies affecting both newspapers.

The proposed strike follows a dispute between management and staff over plans to cut about 90 jobs, mainly in editorial, as part of cost-cutting measures.

NUJ members at the Independent News & Media (IN&M)-owned titles voted 64% in support of strike action in a postal ballot.

Members of the body will take strike action between 5pm and 7pm on Friday (6 March) in the form of an NUJ chapel meeting.
The dispute, according to the NUJ, has arisen after IN&M management rejected a number of requests by staff to leave voluntarily, despite indicating some would be accepted at the start of the process.

NUJ has said it has concerns about the lack of strategic vision across the newspapers.
