Independent sales continue to slide as FT shines

LONDON - As Roger Alton gets ready to take the reigns at The Independent, the paper has suffered the largest decline in sales among the quality dailies, as the Financial Times continues to climb, according to the latest ABCs for March.

The Independent fell 2.32% from February to 246,584 copies, while its six-month average is down 5.05% year on year to 241,702.

The Financial Times, which was named Newspaper of the Year at the British Press Awards this week, once again posted a month on month and year on year increase in sales. Its circulation was up 1.47% to 454,937 and its six-month average is up 1.12% year on year to 448,540 copies.

News International's The Times posted the highest monthly circulation increase amongst the qualities in March, jumping 1.49% to 622,186 copies, although its six-month average is down 3.33% to 626,096.

The Daily Telegraph's circulation was also up, rising 0.86% to 874,124 copies, but its six-month average is down 2.50% year on year to 877,727 copies.

The Guardian posted a small rise in sales during March. Its circulation increased 0.71% to 358,142 copies, however, its six-month average is down 3.60% year on year to 360,415 copies.

Among the red tops, News International's The Sun stayed positive for the month, rising 0.62% to 3,096,086 copies. Its six-month average is also up by 0.31% to 3,090,927 copies.

Rival the Daily Mirror fell 1.12% during March to 1,483,749 copies. Its six-month average is down 3.94% to 1,504,959 copies.

The Daily Star could not repeat its positive performance from the previous month and fell 0.23% to 722,207 copies. Its six-month average is down 4.19% to 736,875.

The Daily Mail's circulation was up 0.59% month on month to 2,308,325 copies, but its six-month average was down 0.59% year on year to 2,318,029 copies.

Circulation at its mid-market rival The Daily Express fell 0.66% to 731,763 copies. Its six-month average is down 2.32% to 753,093 copies.

In the Scottish market, Trinity Mirror's Daily Record fell 0.60% during March to 391,805 copies. Its six-month average is down 4.21% year on year to 393,434 copies.

Scottish quality titles The Herald and The Scotsman both fell. The Herald dropped by a marginal 0.17% to 66,682 copies. Its six-month average is down 5.36% to 67,379.

Circulation at The Scotsman declined 0.73% to 53,128 copies and its six-month average is down by a considerable 8.07% to 53,856 copies.
