Independent News & Media to post improved results

LONDON - Irish media group Independent News & Media said it expects to post improved full-year results at the end of 2001 as a result of improved market conditions throughout the world.

The publisher -- which owns UK broadsheets The Independent and Independent on Sunday, as well as the Irish Independent, said that the Irish market remains extremely buoyant.

Its Australian and UK businesses are performing well, and its South African and New Zealand businesses are showing improvement on the previous year.

Executive chairman Sir Anthony O'Reilly gave the news came at the company's annual general meeting. He added that cost control continues to be a "major focus at all its operations".
