Independent CEO to head O'Reilly's Australian operations

SYDNEY - Brendan Hopkins, chief executive of Independent News & Media, which owns the UK's Independent, is to take over as the head of APN News & Media in Australia, following the speedy resignation of the group's current chief.

Hopkins replaces John Sanders who has resigned from the role after only three months in the job. Sanders has reportedly resigned for reasons of ill health. He had replaced Vincent Crowley in April, after Crowley took a senior role at the Independent.

Hopkins will relocate from London to Sydney to run APN, which is 44.5% owned by Sir Anthony O'Reilly's Independent News & Media. APN owns Australian regional newspapers and radio stations, as well as an outdoor media advertising company.

O'Reilly has long coveted further Australian acquisitions and recently reiterated his interest in buying John Fairfax Holdings, should Australia law regarding the foreign ownership of media change. Fairfax owns papers such as the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age.

Hopkins has been chief executive of the UK operations since 1994, overseeing the recent acquisition of the Belfast Telegraph Group.
