Independent bucks trend, continues to build circulation

LONDON - The Independent has continued to build its circulation following the introduction of its tabloid-size edition -- the only quality broadsheet to record a significant rise over the past month.

The newspaper added 2% to its daily circulation figure to reach 240,326, still the smallest of the broadsheets by a large margin, according to Audit Bureau of Circulation figures published today. Year on year, the Independent has been the only national newspaper other than the Daily Star to improve circulation, boosting its figure by 8.5%.

The only other broadsheet to improve its circulation in the month ending November 23 was the Daily Telegraph, which clawed back 0.3% after recording a fall in October of 2.6%. Its daily circulation for the month was 917,040.

The Times will be hoping that the introduction of its me-too tabloid edition last week will prove a similar boon for circulation. It has been the worst affected broadsheet over the past year, down by 9.6% to 622,102. This represents a month-on-month fall of 1.4% -- although unofficial figures suggest that there was a rise of 50,000 copies over the past month.

Things were looking grim for all the popular tabloids with every title, including last month's strong performer the Daily Star, losing circulation. The Daily Star, part of Richard Desmond's Express Newspapers, dropped by 5.5% from 908,101 last month to 858,305 -- although it remains 16.6% ahead of last year. The Sun and the Mirror were both down by 2%, coming in at 3.39m and 1.9m copies respectively.

Both mid-market tabloids were flat, with the Daily Express up by 0.6% to 950,373 and the Daily Mail ahead by 0.22% to 2.48m.
