I receive the marketing newsletters from our bookclubs, in addition to bol.com's, but I guess these don't count for your question. Apart from this, I get only a handful as I am very careful about what I sign up for.
How many email addresses do you have? I have two - one personal and one for work. I check the work one continually, although the private one tends to get a lot less attention.
What is the best marketing email you have received? In terms of linking in interesting content to appropriate products, I like the marketing emails from Zooba.com (a Bertelsmann owned company) - they are always relevant as I have opted-in for emails on topics I am interested in. With subjects ranging from literature to music, and business to lifestyle, Zooba provides regular newsletters full of fascinating facts.
What is the best attachment you have received? Not sure what you mean by 'best', but certainly the funniest attachment I've seen was a while ago. It was a lager ad for Euro 2000, showing a football stadium with German towels saving the seats for the Germans. Being German, I thought it was hilarious!
What is the worst piece of spam you have received this week? Spam is anything coming into my inbox that I have not requested, and that contains information I am not interested in. I received one yesterday offering me a "100 per cent all- natural breast enlargement
for example, which I don't think I require. As a direct marketing business, the issue of spam is important to us, as it makes it difficult for those of us in the industry to get our message out to people who actually want to hear from us.
Have you passed on any email this week? Yes, I've forwarded a number of work-relevant emails to colleagues either for information or action.
How many emails are in your in-box right now? I have just returned from holiday, so there are more than normal. I try to deal with things as soon as possible.
Should email marketing be opt-in or opt-out? Clearly, commercial considerations must be balanced with customers' concerns about the use of their personal data, and this is why BCA is convinced that a voluntary approach is the correct one. We use the most appropriate mix of e-mail marketing, and have chosen to employ an opt-in approach for new member acquisition. For servicing our club members, we employ an opt-out policy, since we consider email to be an integral part of our communications with members.
Which newsletters have you signed up for? I'm a bit of a news junkie, so I am signed up to a range of newsletters. This includes those which are relevant to the business (publishing and new media industries), which are an excellent way of getting a quick snapshot of the latest news and gossip. I also get daily news alerts from FT.com, and Bertelsmann's internal daily news update. Overall, my favourite is spiegel.de, which ensures I keep up to date with everything that is happening back in Germany.
