IAB slams EC plans for regulation

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) has criticised the

European Commission's recommendation that the UK Government should have

powers to regulate email marketing.

The original proposal from the EC recommended Europe-wide opt-in for

advertising by email and SMS in a bid to stop spam, but Members of the

European Parliament (MEPs) last month said each country should devise

regulations for themselves.

"Forcing the UK Government to introduce legislation breaks a practice of

industry self-regulation that has worked perfectly until now," said

Danny Meadows-Klue, chairman and chief executive of the IAB.
