IAB moves for bigger web ads

The Internet Advertising Bureau is expected to unveil new standards for bigger online ads today, in a move to boost the flagging online advertising industry.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - The Internet Advertising Bureau is expected to unveil new standards for bigger online ads today, in a move to boost the flagging online advertising industry.

The IAB will issue seven new standard sizes to allow advertisers to take more advantage of interactivity and create more 鈥渆motional鈥 ads.

The last time the organisation issued standards was in 1996, when it set eight standard banner sizes. The standards are designed to help agencies and advertisers minimise the cost of creating banners in different sizes.

When banners were first launched, the response rate was about one in 50. This has now dropped to about one in 200.

The new standards include two 鈥渟kyscrapers鈥, which run down the side of a web page, several large rectangles and a pop-up ad.

The new standards come as online media companies try to boost dwindling ad sales by offering more creative formats to customers.
