IAB launches marketers cookie and privacy resource

LONDON - The Interactive Advertising Bureau is this week launching a free online resource for marketers and consumers designed to bring help people understand data protection and privacy.

With cookies affecting the day-to-day operation of most websites and online advertising, the IAB argues that marketers and consumers need to be fully aware of the privacy and security issues that imminent EU legislation could bring.

The site is part of the IAB's commitment to consumer protection on the web through industry self-regulation. It is intended that the resource will form a key part of industry's response to the government's consultation on the implementation of the European Data Protection Directive's requirements on cookies.

IAB chief executive Danny Meadows-Klue said: "This resource is long overdue. We are inviting all UK websites to link to this resource to help consumers understand the issues better. Previously, information about the use of cookies may have been provided in privacy policies, but we now need a more consistent approach so that website visitors can readily access privacy information."

The site features a wealth of cookie and privacy-related content including a template for a cookie policy. The site also features a questionnaire for website owners to help them find out how and why cookies are used on their website. There is also a central resource that will provide up-to-date and impartial information about cookies, how they are used and how users can manage their interaction with cookies.

Barbara Newman, chairman of the IAB's e-commerce working group and senior marketing manager for new media at Yell, said: "Cookies are still a serious issue often overlooked by website owners. Until now, there has been little clear information given to users about the whys and wherefores of cookies. This site provides an excellent first port of call for online publishers."

is a resource designed to serve the whole industry and is supported by leading marketing industry bodies including the European Advertising Standards Alliance, the Federation of European Direct Marketing, the Advertising Association and the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers.
