Hyundai has drafted in a senior retail marketer to head its
marketing in the UK.
Jonathan Spence, brand director of Dixons, is to join Hyundai as
marketing director to replace Ken Lee, who left last week to join the
RAC.
Spence will control Hyundai’s pounds 9m ad budget and will be charged
with raising the profile of the brand, which has just over 1% of UK car
sales.
Spence, who has no experience in marketing cars, was UK marketing
director of specialist hi-fi manufacturer, Bang & Olufsen, before being
recruited by Dixons.
As Marketing went to press, Spence was unavailable and Hyundai refused
to comment on his appointment.
Hyundai’s creative and media buying is done by Leagus Delaney.
According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Hyundai had
sold 16,864 cars in the year to August 1999 compared with 20,301 last
year.
Hyundai is spending pounds 2.5m on its current television campaign for
its Accent Siena hatchback car.
