Hutchison spend tops £1m before '3' phones arrive

Hutchison Telecom has pumped around £1.3m into its launch advertising assault for its 3G mobile brand 3, yet it will still be several weeks before a single handset becomes available for sale.

The company held its launch party this week, on 03/03/03. It had planned to go live last summer, then in time for last Christmas, but technical glitches have delayed its launch.

According to the latest figures from Nielsen Media Research, 3 spent £671,000 up to the end of January, £656,000 of which was in January alone.

The company is understood to have matched that figure for February.

Just over 65,000 UK consumers have pre-ordered a next-generation phone via 3's web site and through its retail stores in London's Oxford Street and Kensington. 3 aims to gain two million customers by the end of the year for handsets costing from £400 to £500.

Creative agency TBWA/ London has devised ads to illustrate the benefits of 3G technology, including video Premiership football highlights. Its other launch services are two-way video calling and video messaging.
