Huntingford, who led the Chrysalis Group in its entry to radio in 1992, will take charge of Virgin Radio as it moves to form a company separate to current owner SMG.
Paul Jackson, Virgin Radio’s chief executive, who will report to Huntingford, described the new chairman as a “very good guardian to have at the top”.
“Richard has more than 20 years experience in radio and is very strong for our strategy and how we work going forward,” he said. “It seems like things are falling into place for us, with a good Rajar and a great V Festival this weekend, which is important for strengthening the brand and the station.”
Rosemary Thorne, group finance director of Ladbrokes, is also joining the board of Virgin Radio Holdings as senior independent director. David Palmer joins as chief financial officer.
Rob Woodward, chief executive of SMG, said the trio would be instrumental in the growth of Virgin Radio.
