The number of entrants who sat the exam yesterday marked a 72% increase on the 288 candidates who took part in the inaugural test last February.
Launched in 2003, for IPA members with a minimum of six months' experience in the industry, the Foundation Certificate forms a key part of IPA president Stephen Woodford's manifesto, which was aimed at introducing qualifications into the agency industry.
Woodford, CEO of WCRS, said: "I'm extremely pleased that so many of the young people in the industry are not only rising to the challenge of sitting the Foundation Certificate, but are seeing the value and importance of professional qualifications.
"Professional qualifications were at the centre of my presidential manifesto and I'm so delighted that the industry has accepted our endeavours so enthusiastically."
Candidates sitting the two-hour exam had already completed an online learning programme, covering marketing, client services, research and evaluation, communications strategy, ideas and execution.
Of the registered candidates, based at 58 agencies, 91% were based in London, 4% in the regions and 5% in Scotland.
