The HTC Vive will be available as a developer edition this spring, with a consumer model set to launch at the end of 2015. Similar to competitors and Samsung Gear VR, the HTC Vive features a headset that covers the user’s eyes and immerses them into another world through Valve’s Steam VR technology.

The tech also includes a 'full-room' scale 360-degree solution, which lets the user walk around and explore the virtual space from every angle. HTC has also developed wireless VR controllers for users to further take control of the VR experience, and aims to eradicate the motion sickness associated with VR.

The brand is initially positioning Vive as a gaming tool and is currently working with developers such as Vertigo Games, Bossa and Google. However it has hinted this remit will be extended, citing travel and retail as other sectors that the technology could feature in.

Glyn Cotton, head of production at creative agency Knit, told Event he was excited about the launch. "We are seeing more and more VR solutions at every event we do," he said. "It looks great, I really want to get my hands on one and test it against Oculus Rift."

Cher Wang, chairwoman of HTC, said: "Vive creates an exciting opportunity for all developers and content creators, to help us bring virtual reality into the mainstream with an end-to-end solution that completely redefines how we entertain ourselves, communicate with each other, learn and, eventually, how we become more productive.

"HTC Vive is real, it’s here and it’ll be ready to go before the start of 2016."
