Hornby offers special edition models in e-commerce trial

Hornby, the model railway and racing car toy manufacturer, is holding an e-commerce trial on its hornby.com and scalextric.com web sites.

Specially created models for members of the Scalextric Racing Club and Hornby Collectors Club have been made available to all users of the web sites to purchase online.

Simon Kohler, Hornby marketing manager, said the aim was to gain an insight into online demand for its toys and to learn about the implications for its retail supply operation.

He said that the trial has been successful so far, but added: "We have an established retail base and sales force, so we have to be careful how we develop e-commerce in the future."

Kohler said that Scalextric had moved its site updating and query response in-house.

He claimed the sites each had about 15,000 unique visitors in September.

Scalextric.com received 423,781 page views; hornby.com got 416,211 views.
