Hong Kong pulls 'Breath' ad due to outbreak of SARS

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has withdrawn a long-running ad campaign that uses the phrase 'Hong Kong: Takes Your Breath Away' because of the SARS epidemic sweeping the Far East.

SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) has caused at least 100 deaths around the world, and has triggered chaos in countries including Singapore, China and Indonesia.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has decided to pull the ad campaign, created by Banks Hoggins O'Shea FCB, because of sensitivity over the strapline.

Press ads had been running for several months, showing how a visit to Hong Kong can offer a whirlwind of cultural and culinary diversity.

However, the campaign is unlikely to be revived until long after all travel restrictions to the region have been lifted.

"There were a couple of advertisements which ran slightly later than we would have liked, owing to difficulties withdrawing them," said a spokesman for the Hong Kong Tourism Board. He confirmed that the ads had now all been pulled.
