Home Office in beers warning

The government has voiced concern at the introduction of premium-strength beers such as Artois Bock, as it continues to try to curb binge drinking.

Inbev is introducing Artois Bock, a 6.2% ABV beer, in the UK. Sister lager Stella Artois is 5.2% in strength, while most lagers are 4%-4.5%.

A Home Office spokeswoman said the government was trying to tackle 'irresponsible promotion'.

Inbev said Artois Bock was designed to be sipped rather than quaffed and would be served in a half-pint glass.

Bock plans to gain distribution in 1000 pubs before Christmas. It will be priced £1.85 a half, and £1.69 per 275ml bottle in the off-trade.
