The Home Office confirmed yesterday (Tuesday) that it is developing a communications strategy to inform UK citizens that they can be the 'eyes and ears' of the government. However, it denied reports it was planning a poster campaign telling people what to do in the event of a gas attack.
On Monday, Prime Minister Tony Blair spoke of the need to strike a balance between alerting people to potential danger and scaring them unnecessarily.
The Home Office said its communications strategy was at an early stage and it had not yet briefed COI Communications on a publicity campaign.
Separately, amaretto liqueur brand Disaronno has defended an ambient media campaign on the London Underground that will pump an almond aroma through several major Tube stations. The campaign could prove controversial because cyanide gases have a bitter almond smell.
A spokesman at the British Transport Police said the chief inspector of operations on the Tube was investigating.
