A 60-second spot breaks nationwide on December 4, though the ad was aired in a one-off slot during ITV's 'X-Factor' on Saturday.
It features scenes from nine Christmas movies but does not include any price promotions, unlike previous HMV Christmas ad campaigns which have focused on the retailer's commercial proposition.
The ad opens on a scene from 'Meet Me in St.Louis', and features the pink HMV logo in one corner of the screen and the iconic 'Nipper' the dog logo in another corner.
Other films that appear in the ad include both versions of 'Miracle on 34th Street', 'Elf', 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', 'Home Alone' and 'It's a Wonderful Life'.
The ad is the latest to appear under HMV's new strapline 'Get Closer', which was introduced earlier this year. The strapline appears at the end of the ad beneath a shower of snowflakes.
The TV ad will also be supported by a major press campaign featuring 25 actors and animated characters from the world of entertainment, such as 'Shrek' and 'Wallace & Gromit'. The print push features actors and animated characters explaining what Christmas means to them.
The campaign was produced in-house at HMV in conjunction with Beechwood Group, QD and brand consultants VentureThree. The project was led by Graham Sim, HMV's marketing director.
