HMV hands key marketing post to Oddbins man

HMV has selected Oddbins marketing chief Laurie Webster as head of marketing, its second-most senior marketing position.

Webster replaces Richard Orr, who left earlier in the year to pursue other interests. He will report to the high-street retailer's marketing director, John Taylor.

He will be responsible for brand development and, in co-operation with HMV's marketing team, oversee ads and promotions, design and display, and local marketing.

The company spent more than £14m on advertising last year. Bds beechwood and OMD UK are its creative and media agencies respectively.

Webster has worked at Oddbins for 14 years in various roles, most recently as head of marketing. He has yet to be replaced.

HMV Europe achieved sales of £867.4m in the year to April 2003, an increase of 10.6%. Like-for-like sales growth of 3.7% contributed to a 19.7% rise in operating profit to £88.6m.
