Hydr8 will be sold in 500ml screw-cap and 500ml sports bottles, as well as in six-packs and five-litre formats.

It will be sold primarily through specialist food service distributors and cash-and-carry outlets, and is geared towards cash-conscious customers.

Highland Spring said Hydr8 is a naturally sourced British water, produced in Glasgow, which promots the eight-glasses-a-day regime.

The launch of Hydro8 will broaden Highland Spring's portfolio, which also includes the upmarket Gleneagles mineral water brand, and its core Highland Spring brand.

According to Nielsen, the UK value water sector accounts for more than 10% of total annual bottled water sales, at 201 million litres.

A Highland Spring group statement said: "Hydr8 comes in a range of sizes, so it is ideal for independent retailers who service a significant share of this market."
