Herald Tribune and German publisher to launch English-language weekly

LONDON - The International Herald Tribune is to close its daily English-language German supplement on Friday June 28 and replace it with a weekly one.

The company blamed mounting losses on the closure of the daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung English edition, a joint venture with the German publisher Frankfurter Allgemeine Publishing Group.

"The losses on the daily FAZ English edition supplement were too great for the two companies to continue bearing," Didier Brun, Herald Tribune director of business development, said. "But we are deeply committed to Germany and we think the FAZ Weekly will serve as a valuable window on German issues, trends and cultural events for English speakers."

The new supplement launches on July 5 and will be carried in the Friday edition of the Herald Tribune in Germany.

It will draw on the pages of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper to provide political and economic news and analysis. The supplement will also contain opinion and coverage of local issues, as well as details of cultural and sporting events.

Anke Bryson, editor-in-chief of FAZ Weekly, said: "We believe a compact digest of German news of relevance to international readers will be an ideal way to keep Herald Tribune readers abreast of major developments in Germany.

"True to the aims of the Herald Tribune's publishing partnership network, it will also serve as a source of practical information about working and living in Germany, making it indispensable reading for expatriates and foreign travellers."

FAZ Weekly joins a growing network of international newspapers the Herald Tribune publishes in collaboration with nine publishing partners around the world. They include Ha'aretz in Israel, Kathimerini in Greece and Corriere della Sera in Italy.
