Heinz tops poll of most remembered brands in the UK

LONDON - Heinz is the most remembered brand in the UK, according to a new survey that sees Coca-Cola, the world's biggest brand, languishing at number six and Pepsi failing to register.

The poll, conducted by market research firm Martin Hamblin GfK, asked people to name five brands of any products or services they could think of, with Heinz coming top of four out of five monthly charts.

Other brands consistently making the top 10 are Sony, which beat Heinz to top the poll in January this year, Kellogg's and Persil.

The top ranking and most consistently appearing British brand was Tesco -- it appeared in every top 10 and was ranked in the top three twice. Rival Sainsbury's also featured regularly, but was consistently lower down and never made the top three.

Surprisingly, in five monthly surveys, Coca-Cola only made the top 10 three times, and the highest it has ranked in any individual month is number five. Rival cola brand Pepsi failed to make the top 20 in any of the monthly surveys.

Other notable brands missing from the survey include Starbucks, IBM and Disney -- all highly ranked on the Interbrand survey of the world's biggest brands. British brands absent from the survey include British Airways, Mars and BP.

Brands that make it into people's homes were highly ranked in the survey, with many FMCG brands like Ariel and Cadbury's in the top 20, along with electrical brands like Hoover and Hotpoint. None of the banks nor financial institutions made the top 50 brands mentioned.
