She replaces Ruud Sjamaar, who has left to become managing director of Dutch bicycle firm Royal Gazelle.
Edwards, who has recently returned from maternity leave, has worked at Heinz for 15 years. She will report to the firm's European deputy president, Chris Warmoth, and co-ordinate all innovation projects across the region. She will also be responsible for marketing best practice.
Edwards' appointment comes as Heinz increases its commitment to innovation.
In the past year the food company has moved into low-carb foods and announced a 15% rise in marketing spend on products for children.
The increased budget will cover promotion of the recent extension of its Farleys brand into on-the-go snacks for babies (Marketing, 1 December).
Scott Garrett, acting brand director for the UK and Ireland in Edwards' absence, has been handed the role of vice-president for brands in the region. The post replaces the brand director role as Heinz' top marketing position in the UK.
Garrett reports to Stefan Barden, Heinz president for the UK and Ireland.
