Heat continues to grow but Now holds its lead

LONDON - There were no real surprises in the women's weekly sector with Emap's celebrity title Heat scoring a 34.8% rise in sales to 478,924, failing to pass the 500,000 mark as some speculation suggested it would.

The latest sales figures give Heat an impressive 103.4% year on year increase and help it close the gap on its closest competitor IPC Media's Now, which managed growth of 3.2% to 570,279, representing a year on year increase of 10%.

OK! proved that the mature celebrity market is still very much alive. The title recorded a period on period increase of 18.2% to 575,307, increasing its lead over arch rival Hello.

Hello dropped 1.7% to 517,883. However, both titles are down on a year ago when they were involved in heavy sampling campaigns. Hello is down 38.5% year on year and OK! 11.7%.

At the top of the women's weekly sector is H Bauer's Take A Break, which recorded a 5.1% period on period increase to 1,207,384 and year on year increase of 3.5%.

IPC's Chat was up 7.7% on the last period to 515,000, a year on year rise of 10.4%, while sister title Woman's Own failed to show any real signs of growth following the arrival of new editor Elsa McAlonan in April. The classic weekly grew 0.1% to 518,861 in the six months to June, a 3.6% decline year on year.

All eyes will be on McAlonan to make improvements at the IPC title in the next period, following a revamp for the title's 70th birthday and a £3m ad campaign.

That's Life grew 1% to 590,162 and recorded a year on year increase of 3.6%. Rival Bella lost 5.2% to 444,620, a year on year decline of 8.3%.

Despite some big growth figures from titles such as Heat and OK!, the sector only managed a 3.6% rise year on year, but over the year it has declined 1.5% to a total circulation of 7,714,635.
