The survey, for the six-month period between March 10 and September 14, gives Heart 106.2FM 7.7m hours of listening a week, a 17.6% share of the commercial market.
This puts it ahead of Capital in terms of listening hours, in contrast to the official Rajar figures. Capital came out top in London in the Rajars during the second quarter of 2003 -- it has 7.4m hours of listening, a 17% share, according to GfK. However, in terms of weekly reach GfK gave Capital 2.6m and Heart 2.4m.
In the Rajars for the three months to June 2003, Capital came out top in London with a weekly reach of 2.6m, an 8.9% share of listening and 7.2m listening hours. Heart scored a weekly reach of 1.85m, a share of 6.7% and 7.7m listening hours.
This month's survey is the first time GfK has reported listening hours for radio stations and comes a week ahead of the latest Rajar figures for the third quarter.
Rajar said yesterday it has agreed to spend a further £500,000 on a second round of testing new versions of two electronic audiometers and associated software, developed by Arbitron and Radiocontrol.
