Havas Sports expands with UK sponsorship agency acquisition

LONDON - Havas Sports, the global sports marketing division of Havas Media, is opening a London office through the acquisition of independent agency Sponsorship Media, for an undisclosed sum.

Sponsorship Media also has offices in France, Spain, India and China. The London office will become Havas Sports, but to serve non-Havas agencies and their clients Sponsorship Media will be maintained in the UK, as an ongoing business in separate offices.

The move improves the presence of Havas Sports in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympic Games. It will benefit from Sponsorship Media's roster of clients including EDF Energy, National Australia Bank, Asda and Friends Provident.

Sponsorship Media also has partnerships with major sporting institutions, including the Rugby Football Union and the England and Wales Cricket Board, as well as broadcasters Sky and ITV.

Keith Impey, chief executive of Sponsorship Media, becomes CEO of Havas Sports UK with Marcus Wight, co-founder of Sponsorship Media, taking up the position of managing director at the newly created shop.

Lucien Boyer, Havas Sports' global chief executive, said: "This acquisition is a great opportunity for Havas Sports to work with a company that have great expertise in the UK sports market, a key market for us to be present in".

Impey said: "We are excited to be working with a global agency network that has event sponsorship as an integrated and central function of its business moving forward.

This move will give us access to more international briefs while also allowing us to grow our existing UK business with external agencies and clients via our 'white label' brand, Sponsorship Media."
