Halifax ad star Howard to release first single for charity

LONDON - Howard Brown, the one-time bank worker who found nationwide fame by appearing in a series of ads for the Halifax, is to make his debut as a recording star with a cover of the Barry White classic 'You're the First, the Last, my Everything'.

Halifax is behind the recording, which is due for release as a single on March 7. All profits will be donated to the NSPCC, which as been chosen by the bank's staff as its charity for the year.

Despite its charitable intentions, 'X Factor' judge Simon Cowell has damned the move, with The Sun reporting him as saying: "He probably sounds as good as he looks, ie he has no chance. It is the worst decision I have heard in my life."

Brown first found fame in 2001, beating 1,000 other Halifax staff to appear in an ad singing a version of the Tom Jones single 'Sex Bomb'. The campaign was derided in the advertising media, but proved to be instantly memorable for the public.

Since then, he has appeared as himself and in animated form in a series of ads. Although he continued to work in his branch for some time after he became famous, he now acts as a brand ambassador for Halifax, appearing at internal and external events.

Brown said: "Making a single is something I've dreamed about and being able to cover a song by an idol, Barry White, is a fantastic opportunity."

He is due back on screens in a new Halifax ad later this year. The campaign is created by DLKW.
