The three-page guide called ‘Celebrate – an ABI guide to planning an event’ lays out safety considerations and insurance requirements when organising a street party or other community celebration for the extended Jubilee weekend on 2-5 June.
The number of street parties for the Jubilee is expected to exceed that of the Royal Wedding last year, when councils in England and Wales received about 5,500 road closure applications for parties.
Nick Starling, director of general insurance at ABI said: "With communities across the country planning thousands of events this year, a few common sense precautions will help ensure that events are fun and safe. Our guide sets out the essential information that any event organiser needs to know, to ensure that celebrations planned are memorable for all the right reasons."
The ABI guide suggests steps such as estimating the number of people who will attend, planning a back-up venue if the weather is bad, being aware of fire risks and how to operate lighting equipment or temporary structures being used.
It says that while there is no law requiring insurance for street parties, the organiser could be personally liable if something goes wrong and public liability insurance might be needed if they work with a local authority or suppliers.
