Guardian poised for Trinity Mirror print deal for new tabloid format

The Guardian is switching to a tabloid newspaper format after reaching a printing deal with Trinity Mirror, according to reports.

Guardian poised for Trinity Mirror print deal for new tabloid format

The move spells an end to the Guardian’s distinctive Berliner format as the newspaper presses ahead with a three-year cost-cutting programme.

Sources have reportedly confirmed a report in today’s Daily Telegraph that the Guardian is to switch to a smaller print format. News about the changes first emerged in January.

However, the Daily Mirror’s parent Trinity Mirror has struck a printing deal with the Guardian, instead of Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, as had been thought previously by industry observers.

The newspaper has been published in Berliner-style format since 2005, moving from the broadsheet format, and was introduced by former editor Alan Rusbridger.

The Guardian is trying to reverse operating losses of £38m in the previous financial year and is one year into a three-year cost-cutting programme.

A spokeswoman said: "We are in the process of reviewing our print operations. When any firm decisions are taken, our staff will be the first to know."
