The move spells an end to the Guardian’s distinctive Berliner format as the newspaper presses ahead with a three-year cost-cutting programme.
Sources have reportedly confirmed a report in today’s Daily Telegraph that the Guardian is to switch to a smaller print format. News about the changes first emerged in January.
However, the Daily Mirror’s parent Trinity Mirror has struck a printing deal with the Guardian, instead of Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, as had been thought previously by industry observers.
The newspaper has been published in Berliner-style format since 2005, moving from the broadsheet format, and was introduced by former editor Alan Rusbridger.
The Guardian is trying to reverse operating losses of £38m in the previous financial year and is one year into a three-year cost-cutting programme.
A spokeswoman said: "We are in the process of reviewing our print operations. When any firm decisions are taken, our staff will be the first to know."
