Guardian to launch news alerts service

Guardian Unlimited is launching a desktop alert service to bring breaking news direct to users’ computer screens, regardless of whether they are using their internet browser.

The alerts will appear on a users’ screen as the news breaks and then disappear when the information is no longer current.

The alerts, which will be composed of hyper-linked headlines, will allow the user to easily click through to the story on Guardian Unlimited.

The free alerts will cover a range of topics from major news events to football updates and travel bargains.

David Long, managing director of Skinkers, the technology provider for the service, said: "Our research proves that news alerts increase the frequency of contact with the audience by up to 20 times and we expect similar results for Guardian Unlimited."

Adam Freeman, head of commercial development for Guardian Unlimited, said: "Breaking news in an incredibly fast, dynamic and competitive market is our livelihood."

He added: " We are constantly seeking new, improved way to deliver news to our audience and innovative advertising solutions for our clients."

The Guardian is also promoting its Saturday newspaper package by giving away another free CD on Saturday 23 April.

The eight track CD will be exclusive to the Guardian and include tracks from Morrisey, New Order, Bjork, The Prodigy and Embrace.

The CD will be promoted on a number of platforms including national television, print, radio and online advertising.

This will be run alongside an ambient campaign in London clubs on Friday night, taking Polaroid photographs of clubbers and giving them out with details of the free CD.

Marc Sands, marketing director of the Guardian said, "This is the latest in a series of FCDs which have worked very well for us in terms of introducing new readers to our Saturday offering and giving something of value back to our loyal readers."
