Guardian introduces online subscription

Guardian Unlimited is to follow the lead of FT.com and start charging for some of its services and is to produce full online versions of The Guardian and The Observer for paying subscribers.

The two newspapers are the only broadsheets to produce full online versions of their printed editions.

An annual subscription to an online Guardian will cost £98.57 and the online Observer will cost £41.12, providing a significant discount to the print version cover price.

Furthermore, the subscriptions will be discounted to £69 and £29 in a launch offer when the online editions debut later this year.

Unlike The Times, which launched an 'e-paper' in May, but restricted its availability to overseas subscribers, The Guardian and The Observer versions will be available to UK users. The Times decided not to make its online version available in the UK because the Audited Bureau of Circulations (ABC) does not include online copies in its sales figures. The Times was concerned that its ABC figures could be adversely affected by people switching to the online version.

From July 8, Guardian Unlimited began charging annual subscriptions of £12.50 for The Wrap, its morning review of daily papers, and The Informer, the site's lunchtime news round-up. Guardian Unlimited crosswords are now only available through a £25 annual subscription.

An edition of the complete Guardian Unlimited site, stripped of all its advertisements, is being offered for an annual fee of £20.
