Grey rises as billings increase

NEW YORK - Shares in Grey Global rose 2 cents yesterday as the company posted a 3% rise in second-quarter billings to $2.1bn (£1.5bn), up from $2bn (£1.4bn) a year ago.

Second-quarter net income, however, fell almost 58% from $5.7m (£4m) a year earlier. Grey attributed the losses to the generally weak business conditions which have affected the advertising industry.

In a statement, chairman and CEO Ed Meyer said, "These difficult conditions were felt more strongly in the US where revenue was down 7% in the second quarter."

Total revenue for the three-month period rose 3% to $314m (£221.7) year on year and 4% for the first half of the year to $619m (£437m).

Grey said that, despite an overall slowdown of new business in the industry, Grey partner companies continued to win important assignments. These include Holiday Inn, Saab Automobiles and Absolut Vodka.
