The supermarkets say the regularly monitor their suppliers and deny that they are selling beef from the Amazon.

The Greenpeace report claims that many companies are profiting from meat supplied by farms responsible for illegal deforestation.

Greenpeace also investigated trade in Brazilian goods made from cattle from such farms and names Adidas, Timberland and Clarks Shoes.

The environmental activist group hopes the report will encourage companies to refuse to buy products sourced from farmland created through illegal deforestation. It also aims to persuade consumers to put pressure on supermarkets and high-street brands to clean up their supply chains.
