The Tourism Action Plan, launched on Friday (26 August), includes initiatives on regulation and red tape to help small businesses capitalise on a post-Brexit boom and encourage visitors to travel outside of London.
Although the plan primarily focuses on boosting leisure tourism, both the Events Industry Board and Business Visits and Events Partnership (BVEP) have said it reaffirms the Government’s continued commitment to prioritising help for the events industry.
Recent progress includes the launch of a DCMS-led UK Business and Events Strategy and the establishment of the Events Industry Board to implement it; the re-establishment of a role for VisitBritain in business visits and events with support from the GREAT Britain campaign; and the launch of a four-year Event Support Programme through VisitBritain, targeting international business events aligned with Britain’s strategic interest.
Nick de Bois, chairman of the Events Industry Board, said he has already received a "significant number" of bids under the Event Support Programme which will be considered later next month once applications for the first round of funding close on 16 September.
"We are also making progress on breaking down some of the barriers to ensure the UK can become the destination of choice for international business events. With the continued help of the Government and Ministers, the events sector can play a significant role in helping British exports and inward investment," he commented.
Michael Hirst, chair of the BVEP, added: "We welcome the new Tourism Action Plan’s recognition of the importance of continuing the work of the Events Industry Board to bring more international events to Britain.
