Government wins tobacco ad ruling

The tobacco industry’s campaign to prevent an early ban on advertising its products in the UK, suffered a blow after the Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the government’s plans to introduce the law before other European countries.

However the injunction preventing the government implementing an immediate ban was upheld by the court allowing the tobacco companies fighting the legislation time to appeal to the House of Lords for a final decision.

The decision effectively means a reprieve for the industry of a couple of months.

The European Union wide ban on tobacco ads is due to come into effect in 2001.
