Government to cull sites

The government has set a target of closing more than 95% of its consumer and business websites and moving the content to Directgov and businesslink.gov by 2011.

Nearly half of all Britons have used the web in the past year to access information about the government, according to Ofcom. However, communications minister Lord Carter said it is confusing to have multiple government websites with no architecture linking them.

In the 'Digital Britain' report launched last week, Carter stated that government should develop a 'roadmap' to a new programme of digital switch-over of public services, so that people access student loans, electoral roll and school registration, and debt advice online.

Each government department has been tasked with identifying one such service to be switched by 2012.
