From this week, a cost-per-click (CPC) ad scheme called AdWords will allow small businesses to place text-based links on Google's UK web site (www.google.co.uk).
The links will appear to the right of users' search results based on target keywords.
Advertisers will be charged a minimum of £5 worth of click-through ads.
Small businesses will be able to place and manage their own online ads using a self-service web page and will be offered advertisement editing and statistic reporting services with a 24-hour turnaround.
Kate Burns, head of UK sales at Google, said that the search engine will also promote premium campaign management services to agencies and blue-chip firms with a £3,000-plus monthly marketing spend over the next four to six weeks.
"The difference between this initiative and other CPC schemes is that the number of clickthroughs will determine an advertiser's rank in the listings," said Burns.
The official launch of the scheme in the UK is part of a European-wide push of AdWords throughout Google's operations, including France, Germany and Italy.
