Up to 2,000 young people are expected to gather at the Birmingham International Convention Centre for the global Festival of Code this summer to to build apps, websites and algorithms and solve real world challenges.

The event has been held since 2009 and is run by Young Rewired State, a worldwide community of digital makers aged 18 and under.

At the festival, sponsors such as Google and SAP will set programming challenges for attendees, who will also be given the chance to meet like-minded peers and expert mentors at the event.

will also make it possible for Young Rewired State to provide assistance with travel costs to and from the event to low income families. Young Rewired State is one of 37 organisations set to receive a 2015 Google RISE (Roots in Science and Engineering) Award to run an access scheme alongside the 2015 Festival.

The program will be aimed at encouraging participation of under-represented groups in computer science, particularly girls and children from low-income families.

For the first time, the festival will open up participation to centres across Europe giving young coders in the UK the opportunity to share skills with their counterparts overseas. This follows the successful hosting of a remote centre in Kosovo previously.

Alongside the Festival of Code, Young Rewired State runs regular meet-ups around the UK, in partnership with American Express, through its ‘Hyperlocal’ programme. These informal sessions allow young developers to brush up on their skills in advance of the Festival.
